1. PRESENTACION / FOREWORD
Comparando el tráfico correspondiente al año 1.987
con el de 1.986 y anteriores, se observa una ligera recupe-ración
en el número de barcos y su TRB que no se puede
considerar significativa, si se observan los gráficos corres-pondientes
en los que se produce una pendiente suave
descendente desde 1.970, año en que se alcanzó la má-xima
cifra de TRB de barcos en ei Puerto y que no se ha
recuperado.
En las mercancías se mantiene el aumento medio
anual que se viene produciendo desde 1.979 de unas
340.000 Tn., en cuya cantidad pesan principalmente las
mercancías de importación como consecuencia del pau-latino
aumento de consumo de una población todavía cre-ciente
y con un poder adquisitivo ligeramente ascendente.
La pesca congelada, que constituye un sector de
gran importancia en este puerto, como centro mundial de
contratación, ha vuelto a descender este año aunque aún
se mantiene en las cifras fluctuantes de los últimos doce
años, entre las 450.000 y 600.000 Tn. totales de desem-barcada,
embarcada y transbordada.
El número de contenedores continúa aumentando
muy por encima del aumento del tráfico de mercancías
debido a la progresiva containerización de este puerto,
que no parece haber alcanzado su techo todavía. La do-tación
de las recientes terminales está siendo decisiva
en este proceso.
En los petróleos, muy importantes por lo que supone
para el avituallamiento, que fue la actividad motivadora
inicialmente de la importancia de este Puerto desde la
época del carbón, no se observan diferencias importantes
manteniéndose las cifras con altibajos desde 1.981.
En lo que se refiere a la facturación de los
3.083.487.000 Pts. de 1.987, se puede comprobar que ~e
mantiene la pendiente media del gráfico desde 1.983,
año en que se realizan modificaciones en los controles con
resultados muy satisfactorios.
Las obras más significativas de 1.987 han sido las
siguientes:
La iniciación del muelle adosado al Reina Sofía con
un importe de 1.500.000.000 de Pts. que quedará termi-nado
en Marzo de 1.989, con una línea de atraque de 20 m.
de calado y 700 m. de longitud en donde la BRITISH
PETROLEUM, compañía petrolífera concesionaria del
puerto, cuya factoría quedará terminada a primeros de

Regarding merchandises, the annual rate of in-crease
that has been taking place since 1979, of about
340.000 tn, is kept up. In this amount imported goods
are the most important, as a consequence of the gradual/y
consumption increase of an upgoing population with an
increasing purchasing power likewise.
Frozen fish, a sector of great importance in this
portas world trade centre, has decreased this year again,
even though it stands on the fluctuating figures of the last
twelve years, between 450.000 and 600.000 tn of disem-barked,
embarked and transshipped ones.
The number of containers keeps on increasing,
still more than the increase of merchandise traffic, due to
the progressive containerisation in this port which seems
not to have reached its top yet. The recently provided
container terminals are being decisive in this process.
In the chapter of provisioning, oils play a special
role for they were the initial activity which motivated the
port's developement since the coa/ days. Their figures
do not show any outstanding deficiency and they are kept
up with ups and downs since 1. 981.
Considering the turnover of 3.083.487 pesetas
during 1.987, one can see that medium slope of the
corresponding graphic is kept up since 1.983, year in w_hich
control changes were made with satisfactory results.
The most remarkable works during 1.987 are the
following:
The beginning of the quay leant against Reina Sofía
dike, with a budget of 1.500 mil/ion pesetas, which wi/1 be
completed on March 1.989, with a berth line of 20 metres
draught and 700 metres length and where the oíl company

1.989 instalará tomas de tuberías para descarga de com-bustibles
y el correspondiente avituallamiento.
Esta obra va a suponer un avance en la racionaliza-ción
de las operaciones portuarias porque permitirá la
expansión de la zona de tráfico interinsular cada vez más
containerizada, la de la zona pesquera a costa de los
antiguos muelles de mercancía general con anchos
exiguos, que serán sustituidos por el Muelle León y Castillo,
en la zona que queda por ensanchar dotándolo de galerías
subterráneas como en sus 1.000 m. primeros; sin perjuicio
de la actividad de suministros de combustibles.
O sea, se producirá una reorganización en cadena
de las operaciones del Puerto que supondrá una mayor
racionalización con mejoras de los rendimientos y como
consecuencia una mayor economía.
Es de esperar que con ello se consiga también que
el muelle de reparaciones de 500 m. de longitud pueda
dedicarse a las reparaciones y no a servir de base a flotas
pesqueras.
La puesta en marcha del módulo n.0 1 de la pota-bilizadora
de agua de mar con la producción de 500 m3 /día
y con un coste de 173 millohes de Pts. que llegó a tiempo
para resolver la escasez que se produjo en el verano que
habría supuesto un grave riesgo si no se hubiesen podido
atender peticiones de agua de algunos barcos.
En inversiones ha sido importante la expropiación
de la Península de El Nido por un importe de 215 millones
de pesetas, que ha supuesto la ampliación de la zona de
servicio en el extremo N. E. de tal manera que en esos te-rrenos
el puerto linda con la zona expropiada por el antiguo
Ministerio de la Guerra y que hoy utiliza Defensa para sus
cuarteles, instrucción y prácticas de tiro. Un día el puerto
podría ampliar su zona de servicio en esos terrenos de
Patrimonio del Estado si el Gobierno lo estimase
conveniente.
En este año de 1.987 se han otorgado las conce-siones
de cinco rampas de varada en la zona situada entre
las instalaciones de ASTICAN, (con su sincrolift) y el
arranque del Dique Reina Sofía, de una zona dotada de
diversos talleres auxiliares de las reparaciones de buques.
Así se podrán demoler las existentes en la zona noble de
entrada al Puerto en el año 1.989.
Se han recibido los resultados de los ensayos de
laboratorios. efectuados por el CEDEX que indican la ne-cesidad
de la prolongación del Dique Reina Sofía para
conseguir el abrigo de las aguas del puerto en relación

These works suppose a step forward in the ratio-nalization
of the port operations for they wi/1 allow the
expanding of the interinsular traffic area - more containe-rized
every day as we/1 as the fishing area which wi/1 be
expanded over the old quays~ with reduced widths, for
general merchandise. They wi/1 be replaced by the León y
Castillo dock at the zone still to enlarge, providing it with
underground galleries like the one existing in the first 1.000
metres, without prejudicing the combustible supplying
activity.
That is to say a chain reorganization of the port
operations wi/1 take place, envolving improvements of the
returns anda greater economy therefore.
lt is expected that the 500 metres long reparations
dock can be devoted to repairs and not as a base for
fishing fleets.
The shortage of water suffered during the summer
that could have risked the supply to vessels, was so/ved
in time by putting into service the module number 1 of the
desalination plant, with an output of 500 m3 lday and at
a cost of 173 mil/ion pesetas.
The expropriation of the Península de El Nido, ata
cost of 215 mil/ion pesetas, has been very important in the
investment chapter for it envolves the expanding of the
port area at the North-East end, where the port borders
on a zone of the Defense Department used for quarters,
training and shooting exercises.
During 1. 987 concessions have ·b een awarded to
prívate operators for five, slipways in the zone between
the installations of ASTICAN (with syncrolift) and the foot
of Reina Sofía dike, which is provided with severa/ ships
reparation workshops. In this wey it wi/1 be able to demolish
the ones existing in the area next to the entrance of the
port in 1.989.
The results of the tests made by CEDEX show the
necessity of prolonging the Reina Sofía dike, in order to
shelter the waters of the port from southern storms which
always come in rolling in South-East direction.

con los temporales del S. que entran siempre rolando en
dirección. S.E.
La prolongación habrá que ejecutarla en un ángulo
con el dique actual cuya dirección es N.S., para no entor-pecer
el acceso al Puerto por encima de calados de 20 m.
Con todo eso en el puerto se perfila a medio plazo
una mejora notable para su racionalización y también para
poder obtener un mínimo de instalaciones que constituyan
una oferta para consolidarse como estación de tránsito
para los países africanos tanto de las mercancías proce-dentes
de América del Sur como, aunque sea una alta
aspiración, de las de Europa y Norteamérica, con posi-bilidades
de que en sentido contrario se puedan efectuar
elaboraciones de materias primas para su exportación a
los países desarrollados.
La Ciudad de Las · Palmas de Gran Canaria, tam-bién
podrá beneficiarse de la citada prolongación del Dique
Reina Sofía que protegerá la escollera de la Avenida Ma-rítima
permitiendo un ensanche para actividades sociales,
deportivas y culturales, que podrá constituir un verdadero
parque, animado con las maniobras de veleros, embar-caciones
deportivas y de los vistosos cruceros turíticos.
The prolongation of this dike must be made on an
angle with the same and in N.S. direction so as not to dis-turb
the entry to the port in draughts over 20 metres.
Ali these facts draw a profile of the port that shows
a short-term remarkable improvement of its rationaliza-tion
as we/1 as the availability of installations, as an offer
to consolidate itself as a transit station for African countries
not only for merchandises from South America, but - even
though it is a high desire - from Europe and North Arnerica,
with possibilities to e/abarate raw materials to export to
developed countries.
The city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria wi/1 a/so
get advantages from the prolonging of the Reina Sofía
Dike that will protect the breakwater of the Maritime Avenue
and enable some enlargement of the same for social,
sports and cultural activities which can be a real park,
ful/ of lite with the manoeuvering of sailing and sports
boats arid colourful turist cruisers too.

2.7. COMUNICACIONES INTERIORES Y ACCESOS TERRESTRES
INNER COMMUNICATIONS AND ROAD ACCESSES
2.7.1. COMUNICACIONES INTERIORES / INNER COMMUNICATIONS
2.7.1.1. CARRETERAS/ ROADS
Existe una vía fundamental , dentro del Puerto que
comienza en el Muelle de Santa Catalina y conecta los
muelles de Ribera, Espigón del Castillo, Muelle de La Luz,
Primo de Rivera y Muelle de León y Castillo, con acceso a
todos ellos. A continuación , entra en la zona de Dársena
Exterior, accediendo a los muelles EN-1 y EN-2 y comuni-cando
la zona de astilleros y demás concesiones de aquel
sector.
Se desarrolla en una longitud de 4.000 metros con
firme de mezcla asfáltica.
La otra vía principal, se inicia en la Plaza de Manuel
Becerra y, dirigiéndose hacia el Sur, se cruza con la ante-rior,
llegando al arranque del Muelle de León y Castillo,
que recorre en toda su longitud.
Se desarrolla en una longitud de 2. 700 metros y
tiene un firme de mezcla asfáltica salvo en el Muelle que es
de hormigón hidráulico.
lnside the port runs a main road which starts at
Santa Catalina Dock connecting the Docks of Ribera,
Espigón del Castillo, Muelle de La Luz, Primo de Rivera y
León y Castillo, with accesses to al/ of them. lt runs next up
to the Outer Dock reaching the docks EN-1 and EN-2, so
that shipyards and concessions of the zone are connec-ted.
This road runs along 4.000 metres on an asphaltic
foundation.
Another important road starts at Plaza Manuel Be-cerra.
lt runs south and intersects the previous one rea-ching
the beginning of the León y Castillo Dock after-wards.
This road has a length of 2. 700 metres with an
asphaltic mixture foundation except on the dock where it
is made of concrete.

2.7.2. ACCESOS TERRESTRES / OUTSIDE COMMUNICA TIONS
2.7.2.1. POR CARRETERA / ROADS
Las comunicaciones del puerto con su reducido
«hinterland» (sólo la isla de Gran Canaria, que tiene unos
50 Kms. de diámetro), son todas por carretera. No hay
ferrocarriles.
La comunicación con el aeropuerto internacional ,
situado a 23 kms., se efectúa por la carretera desdoblada
(dos carriles en cada sentido) denominada de Las Palmas
al Aeropuerto de Gando.
Existen en la actualidad tres accesos de población
a la zona portuaria. Uno por el muelle de Santa Catalina,
otro por la Urbanización «El Cebadal » y el tercero, el
principal, que da acceso a los muelles de La Luz, Primo de
Rivera y Muelle de León y Castillo. Los tres accesos se
comunican entre sí por el interior de la zona portuaria.
2.7.2.2. POR FERROCARRIL / RAILWA YS
No existe / None.
2.7.2.3. POR TUBERIA / PIPELINES
Los depósitos de agua del Puerto, situados en una
cota de 60 metros sobre el nivel del mar, con una capaci-dad
de almacenamiento de 30.000 metros cúbicos, están
comunicados para recibir agua, con los depósitos regula-dores
« Isleta» y « Lomo del Polvo» del Servicio Municipal
de Abastecimiento de Agua de Las Palmas, por sendas
tuberías de 800 metros y 7.000 metros de longitud respec-tivamente,
ambas de 250 mm. de diámetro. Igualmente
mediante otra tubería de 4.000 metros de longitud y tam-bién
de 250 mm. de diámetro, prolongación de la que llega
al depósito del «Lomo del Polvo» , se enlaza con unas
cantoneras situadas en Almatriche, lugar donde se tiene
acceso al mercado del agua.
Del depósito del Puerto parte una red principal de
tuberías de 250 mm. de diámetro, de la que se ramifican
las tuberías de distribución a los diferentes muelles, dota-dos
todos ellos de tomas de agua de 70 mm. de diámetro.
Existen dos tuberías de 6" de diámetro para des-carga
de aceite vegetal, que van desde el Muelle de La Luz
a la refinería, en el exterior del puerto.
The communícatíons of the port to the reduced
hinterland of Gran Canaria (the ísland is only 50 km. día-meter)
are al/ carríed out by roads as there are no raílways
on the island.
The communícatíon to the ínternatíonal aírport, 23
km. away from the cíty, is carríed out by the híghway
called «Las Palmas al Aeropuerto de Gando».
At present there are three approaches to the port
area. One at Santa Catalina dock, a second one through
the Urbanízatíon called «E/ Cebadal» anda thírd one, the
main one, which gíves access to the docks of La Luz,
Primo de Rivera and León y Castíllo. Al/ three are ínter-communicated
ínsíde the port.
The water tanks of the port are located 60 metres
above the sea leve/, with capacíty for 30.000 cubíc me-tres.
In order to receíve the water they are connected to
the regulatíon tanks of the Town Water Supply Servíce
named «Isleta» and «Lomo del Polvo», by two pípelínes of
800 me tres and 7. 000 me tres length respective/y, both
with a diameter of 250 mm. At the same time, another
pipeline of 4.000 metres length and 250 mm díameter,
which is a prolongation of the one that runs up to the

mm diameter, comes out from the water tank of the port
anda ramífícatíon on the same dístríbutes the water to al/
supply points of the dífferent quays, províded wíth outlets
of 70 mm díameter.
There are a/so two pípelínes of 6 ínches díametf.
for the unloadíng of vegetable oíl, whích run from the qué
of La Luz to the Refínery outsíde the port.

2.7.2.4. LINEAS REGULARES AEREAS / REGULAR AIR SERVICE
El Puerto de La Luz y Las Palmas, está comuni-cado
a través del Aeropuerto Internacional de Las Palmas -
Gando, abierto permanentemente a todo tipo de tráfico, con
muchos de los principales países del mundo, mediante líneas
regulares, además de los numerosos vuelos «charter» que
en el mismo operan , así como de los vuelos enlazados vía
Madrid, Barcelona y otros.
The Port of La Luz and Las Palmas is connected to
many of the main countries of the world through the
international Airport Of Las Palmas - Gando, permanente-
/y open to al/ kinds of traffic by regular fines and charters, as
we/1 as flights vía Madrid, Barcelona and others.
