              NUESTRA PORTADA I OUR FRONT COVER
Nuestro quehacer cotidiano está en­caminado
con demasiada frecuencia a la
optimización de los resultados económi­cos,
pero no por ello debemos olvidar, y
no queremos olvidarlo, la escala humana
que en tal fundamental proporción inter­viene
en el trabajo y las ilusiones de todos
los días.
Estamos convencidos de la vigencia
del casi eterno tema "el Puerto y la Ciudad»;
queremos acercar a los que trabajan y
conocen el puerto y a los que lo ven como
algo incomprensible; queremos que se
entiendan los que ven el puerto como puro
elemento mercantil y los que lo idealizan
como punto de partida de ilusionadas aven­turas;
aspiramos a que el Puerto manejado
por los mayores no olvide al Puerto visto
por los que ya lo serán algún día.
Al presentar la Memoria - 83 quedó
convocado un concurso anual de dibujo
o pintura entre los niños de nuestra pro­vincia,
que se dio a conocer a través de
los Colegios de E.G.B.
El concurso se celebró en No­viembre
de 1984, coincidiendo con los
Actos de Clausura del 1 CENTENARIO DEL
PUERTO DE LA LUZ, con una apreciable
participación y fue todo un éxito en cuanto
a la calidad de los trabajos presentados.
La Consejería de Cultura del Go­bierno
de Canarias, la Consejería de Cul­tura
del Cabildo Insular de Gran Canaria,
el Ayuntamiento de Las Palmas y la
Compañía Trasmediterránea colaboraron
con la Junta del Puerto en la organización
y desarrollo del Concurso.
Felo Monzón, pintor y profesor de
sensibilidad probada, ayudó a elegir el
mejor entre los mejores y el mejor está,
como habíamos prometido, en NUESTRA
PORTADA.
Gracias por su participación. Que­remos
seguir ensayando el que nuestra
portada sea de ustedes, de los que un día
tomarán el relevo.
Our daily duty is too often aimed at
obtaining the most favourable economical
results, but we must not therefore forget
it, and in fact we do not forget the human
part whose contribution to the daily work
is of great importance.
We are sure of the validity of the
almost eternal subject " The Port and the
City»; we would like to approach those
who work in the Port and know about it
to those who see itas something incom­prehensible;
we wish that those who
consider the portas a pure business ele­ment
would get along with those who
idea/ize itas a starting point of i/Jusions of
adventures; it is our hope that the Port
managed by the elders sha/J not forget
the Port seen by those who one day wi/J
be elders too.
When the Annual Reportfor 1983 was
presented, a yearly competition for dra­wing
or painting was convoked among
the children of our province, made known
through the Elementary Schools.
The competition was held in No­vember
1984, at the same time as the FIRST
CENTENNIAL OF THE PORT OF LA LUZ.
Closing Ceremony, with a remarkable
participation which happened to be a
succes regarding the quality of the works.
The Counci/ of Culture of the Ca­narian
Goverment; the Council of Culture
of the lsland Administration; the Town
Council and the Trasmediterránea Company
cooperated with the Junta del Puerto in
the organization and developement of
the competition.
Fe/o Monzón, painter and teacher
of we/J known sensitivity, helped us to
choose the best among the works and this
one is, as we had promised, to be seen
on our front cover.
Thanks for your participation. We
should like to keep on trying that our front
cover be yours, those who one day will

1. PRESENT ACION / INTRODUCTION
El ejercicio de 1.984 ha respondido al inicio de los
efectos de reajustes emprendidos en el año anterior. La
evolución de algunos datos estadísticos presenta una ten­dencia
positiva pero en su conjunto el Puerto no presenta
espectativas claras de un fuerte incremento en los próxi­mos
años. A pesar de que en algunos aspectos la activi­dad
portuaria aumenta (bunkering, contenedores, etc.), no
se consolida aún una visión clara de crecimiento. La resis­tencia
a un despegue en la economía mundial es posible­mente
la explicación.
En el aspecto interno, este año se han acometido
algunos ajustes que han producido unos resultados muy
positivos, el cash flow del Puerto alcanzó la cifra de
1.210.997 pesetas. Es sin duda la consecuencia de una
mejora de gestión de todo el equipo del Puerto, no de una
modificación de tarifas. En esta línea, aún no se ha llegado
a una gestión plenamente efectiva.
A pesar de los esfuerzos realizados a lo largo de
este año, el Puerto aún presenta un estancamiento impor­tante
en la modernización del utillaje. Tanto por parte de la
iniciativa privada, como pública, debe continuarse en este
empeño en el próximo ejercicio. La inversión pública au­mentará
sustancialmente.
En la promoción exterior, se han obtenido a lo largo
del año, algunos efectos positivos. La búsqueda de nue­vos
tráficos así como el Proyecto Sur - Sur han de ser
algunas de las líneas de trabajo que hemos de continuar
este año.
Siguen latentes dos grandes problemas que a pe­sar
de haberse abordado, aún están sin resolver: La rees­tructuración
de las operaciones de carga-descarga y el
marco de Puerto Autónomo. Ambos deben ser concluidos
a lo largo de 1.985.
Deben seguir manifestándose para el próximo año
estos objetivos de modernización en la que Trabajadores,
Empresas y Administración, hemos de trabajar unidos.
The effects produced by the adjustments initia­ted
the previous year ha ve been noted along 1984. The
evolution of some statistical figures show a positive
tendency, but as a whole, the port does not present
clear expectations of a great growth in the next years.
Even though in certain respects the port activity increa­ses
(bunkering, containers, etc.) a clear view of growth
is not consolidated yet. The resistance of the world
economy to start off is probably the explanation.
Regarding the interna/ aspect, during the year
some adjustments have been made with very positive
results, the Cash Flow of the port has reached the
amount of 1.210.997 pesetas. There is no doubt that
this has been the consequence of a management im­provement
of the whole team of the port and not of a
tariffs' modification. In this fine, a ful/ effective manage­ment
has not been yet achieved.
In spite of the attempts realized along the year,
the port is at an important standstill, as far as moderni­zation
of equipment is concerned. Private and public
initiative must continue in this fine throughout the next
year. Public investment will increase substantially.
Concerning the externa/ promotion of the port,
some positive effects have been achieved along the
year. The search for new traffics as well as the South
Project are some of the working fines for us to follow in
the present year.
Two great problems are not so/ved yet, even
when they heve been tackled: reorganization of loa­dinglunloading
operations and the Port's Autonomy
framework. Both must conclude along 1985.
These modernization aims must persist in the
next year for which achievement, workers, companies
and public administration ought yo work together.

1.4. INFORME DE LA DIRECCION I REPORT OF THE DIRECTOR
Esta memoria confeccionada anualmente con arre­glo
a un modelo oficial para todos los puertos españoles,
pretende facilitar año por año, el conocimiento público de
las características técnicas del Puerto, las instalaciones al
servicio del comercio y la navegación y la actividad desa­rrollada
cuantificada en las estadísticas del Tráfico de
pasajeros, buques, mercancías, avituallamiento y pesca
así como la relación de las inversiones realizadas en las
obras de ampliación y mejora, que permiten al Puerto
responder a sus necesidades cotidianas y a las que sur­gen
en el empeño de mejorar y hacer más económicos los
servicios de transporte.
En el análisis comparativo de los datos estadísticos
con respecto al año 1.983, llama la atención el aumento de
barcos pesqueros entrados en el Puerto, lo cual se refleja
en una cierta recuperación del movimiento de pesca con­gelada,
que es índice de gran trascendencia para este
Puerto.
El total de mercancías aumenta en un 5,54% moti­vado
sobre todo por el avituallamiento, la mercancía gene­ral
diversa y la pesca congelada.
Ha sido importante el aumento de pasajeros así
como el del número de contenedores equivalentes a 20
pies. Puede afirmarse que el aumento de mercancía gene­ral
diversa se ha producido en contenedores.
Las obras más importantes son:
La colocación de tuberías para combustible en los
primeros ·mil metros de antiguo Dique del Generalísimo,
hoy llamado Muelle de León y Castillo y el comienzo de la
demolición de su espaldón.
La terminación de las obras del Parque, Talleres,
Almacenes y Vestuarios y el comienzo de su habilitación
para el traslado de todos los servicios de la Junta.
El avance de los rellenos en la Galería de Servicios
del Muelle Grande (Muelle de León y Castillo). La termina­ción
del 2.0 tramo del Muelle de Reparaciones en su
infraestructura.
En las inversiones de la iniciativa privada cabe
destacar la de la grúa pórtico para terminal de contenedo­res
en el Muelle E.N.1, concesión otorgada a IBERICA
CANARIA y la práctica terminación de la factoría de
DUCAR.
Por último, no puede dejarse de resaltar aquí el
empeño y dedicación de tantas personas que trabajan en
este Organismo, gracias a cuyo esfuerzo se hace posible
la compleja misión de esta Junta que en continua evolu­ción
intenta conseguir para el puerto el mejor funciona­miento
posible.
Es de agradecer por otro lado la colaboración que
presta para el buen gobierno del puerto la Administración

The present Report is yearly issued according to
an official model foral/ Spanish ports, with the purpose of
providing the public with detailed information about the
technical characteristics of the port, the commercial and
navigational facilities, the activity carried on, quantifica­tion
of which is to be seen troughout the statistics of
passengers, vessels, cargo, supplies and fishing traffics,
as wel/ as the list of realized investments for extension and
improvement works which enable the port to meet the
dai/y demands and those which arise as a consequence
of the determination to offer a better and more economical
transport service.
In the comparative analysis of the statistical figures
regarding the year 1983, one's attention is drawn by the
increase of fishing boats entered in the port, which shows
a certain recovery of the frozen fish traffic, being this a
sign of great significance for this port.
The total cargo increased in a 5,54% caused
mainly by provisioning, general ca!'go and frozen fish.
The increase of passengers and the number of 20
feet equivalence containers has been remarkable as well.
lt can be stated that the increase of general cargo has
taken place in containers.
The most important completed works are:
lnstallation of fue/ pipes in the first thausand metres
of the León y Castillo Dock (fomerly called Dique del
Generalísimo) d the beginning of its breakwater wall
demolition.
Parking, Workshops, Warehouses and Cloac­krooms
and the beginning of their setting up for the remo­val
of al/ the services of the Junta del Puerto.
The advance of the filling in the underground ga-
1/ery of the Muelle Grande (León y Castillo dock). The
completion of the second stretch of the Reparations Dock
in its infraestructure.
With regard to investments of prívate iniciative, it is
appropriate to point out the portal crane for the Container
Terminal at the EN-1 dock, acquired by the concessionary
IBERICA CANARIA, as well as the completion ofthe bun­kering
installation by the Company DUCAR.
Final/y, I should like to refer to the determination
and devotion of the many people which compase the staff
of this Organization, by whose efforts the complex duty of
this Junta del Puerto is being possible.
On the other hand, grateful acknowledgement
must be made for the cooperation given by Customs
Administration, Military Marine Command, Shipping
Agents Association and many other public and private
bodies.

INNER COMMUNICATIONS AND ROAD ACCESSES
2.7.1. COMUNICACIONES INTERIORES / INNER COMMUNICATIONS
2.7. 1.1. CARRETERAS / ROADS
Existe una vía fundamental , dentro del Puerto que
comienza en el Muelle de Santa Catalina y conecta los
muelles de Ribera, Espigón del Castillo, Muelle de La Luz,
Primo de Rivera y Muelle de León y Castillo, con acceso a
todos ellos. A continuación, entra en la zona de Dársena
Exterior, accediendo a los muelles EN-1 y EN-2 y comuni­cando
la zona de astilleros y demás concesiones de aquel
sector.
Se desarrolla en una longitud de 4.000 metros con
firme de mezcla asfáltica.
La otra vía principal, se inicia en la Plaza de Manuel
Becerra y, dirigiéndose hacia el Sur, se cruza con la ante­rior,
llegando al arranque del Muelle de León y Castillo,
que recorre en toda su longitud.
Se desarrolla en una longitud de 2.700 metros y
tiene un firme de mezcla asfáltica salvo en el Muelle que es
de hormigón hidráulico.
/nside the port runs a main road which starts in
Santa Catalina Dock connecting the Docks of Ribera,
Espigón del Castillo, Muelle de La Luz, Primo de Rivera y
León y Castillo, with accesses to al/ of them. lt runs next up
to the Outer Dock reaching the docks EN-1 and EN-2, so
that shipyards and concessions of the zone are connec­ted.
This road runs along 4.000 metres on an asphaltic
foundation.
Another important road starts at Plaza Manuel Be­cerra.
lt runs south and intersects the previous one rea­ching
the beginning of the León y Castillo Dock afte­rwards.
This road has a length of 2. 700 metres with an
asphaltic mixture foundation except on the dock where it
is made of concrete.
2.7.2. ACCESOS TERRESTRES / OUTSIDE COMMUNICATIONS
2.7.2.1. POR CARRETERA / ROADS
Las comunicaciones del puerto con su reducido
«hinterland» (sólo la isla de Gran Canaria, que tiene unos
50 Kms. de diámetro), son todas por carretera. No hay
ferrocarriles.
La comunicación con el aeropuerto internacional,
situado a 23 kms., se efectúa por la carretera desdoblada
(dos carriles en cada sentido) denominada de Las Palmas
al Aeropuerto de Gando.
Existen en la actualidad tres accesos de población
a la zona portuaria. Uno por el muelle de Santa Catalina,
otro por la Urbanización " El Cebadal,, y el tercero, el
principal, que da acceso a los muelles de La Luz, Primo de
Rivera y Muelle de León y Castillo. Los tres accesos se
comunican entre sí por el interior de la zona portuaria.
The communications of the port to the reduced
hinterland of Gran Canaria (the island is only 50 km. dia­meter)
are ali carried out by roads as there are no railways
on the island.
The communication to the international airport, 23
km. away from the city, is carried out by the highway
called «Las Palmas al Aeropuerto de Gando».
At present there are three approaches to the port
area. One at Santa Catalina dock, a second one through
the Urbanization called «El Cebada/,, anda third one, the
main one, which gives access to the docks of La Luz,
Primo de Rivera and León y Castillo. Al/ three are inter­communicated
inside the port.

2.7.2.2. POR FERROCARRIL I RAILWAYS
No existe I None.
2.7.2.3. POR TUBERIA / PIPELINES
Los depósitos de agua del Puerto, situados en una
cota de 60 metros sobre el nivel del mar, con una capaci­dad
de almacenamiento de 30.000 metros cúbicos, están
comunicados para recibir agua, con los depósitos regula­dores
«Isleta,, y «Lomo del Polvo ,, del Servicio Municipal
de Abastecimiento de Agua de Las Palmas, por sendas
tuberías de 800 metros y 7.000 metros de longitud respec­tivamente,
ambas de 250 mm. de diámetro. Igualmente
mediante otra tubería de 4.000 metros de longitud y tam­bién
de 250 mm. de diámetro. Igualmente mediante otra
tubería de 4.000 metros de longitud y también de 250 mm.
de diámetro, prolongación de la que llega al depósito del
«Lomo del Polvo", se enlaza con unas cantoneras situa­das
en Almatriche, lugar donde se tiene acceso al mer­cado
del agua.
Del depósito del Puerto parte una red principal de
tuberías de 250 mm. de diámetro, de la que se ramifican
las tuberías de distribución a los diferentes muelles, dota­dos

Existen dos tuberías de 6"' de diámetro para des­carga
de aceite vegetal, que van desde el Muelle de La Luz
a la refinería, en el exterior del puerto.
The water tanks of the port are located 60 metres
above the sea leve/, with capacity far 30.000 cubic me­tres.
In arder to receive the water they are connected to
the regulation tanks of the Town Water Supply Service
named «Isleta» and «Lomo del Polvo», by two pipelines of
800 metres and 7.000 metres length respective/y, both
which a diameter of 250 mm. At the same time, another
pipeline of 4.000 metres length and 250 mm diameter,
which is a prolongation of the one that runs up to the
«Lomo del Polvo» tank, is connected to sorne waterworks
situated in «Almatriche» the place where the water market
is reached.
The main pipeline system, with pipelines of 250
mm diameter, comes out from the water tank of the port
anda ramification on the same distributes the water to al/
supply points of the different quays, provided with outlets
of 70 mm diameter.
There are a/so two pipelines of 6 inches diameter
far the unloading of vegetable oil, which run from the qua y
of La Luz to the Refinery outside the port.

El Puerto de La Luz y Las Palmas, está comuni­cado
a través del Aeropuerto Internacional de Las Palmas -
Gando, abierto permanentemente a todo tipo de tráfico, con
muchos de los principales países del mundo, mediante líneas
regulares, además de los numerosos vuelos «charter,, que
en el mismo operan, así como de los vuelos enlazados vía
Madrid, Barcelona y otros.

many of the main countries of the world through the
international Airport Of Las Palmas - Gando, is permanen­te/
y open to ali kinds of traffic by regular lines and charters, as
well as flights vía Madrid, Barcelona and others.

Existen 4 rampas de transbordadores para carga
y descarga de automóviles, una móvil en el muelle EN-1 ,
de 8 mts. de ancho, y 3 en el muelle de transbordadores
de Santa Catalina, una de ellas fija y otras dos móviles de
7 y 8 mts. de ancho.
TRAFICO DE CONTENEDORES I CONTAINERS
Se dispone del muelle EN-1 de 51 O Mts. de longitud
y 12 Mts. de calado con 3 grúas de pórtico de 30 Tns. y
otra de 35 Tns. , y del muelle EN-2 de 41 O Mts. de longitud
y 12 Mts. de calado. La superficie de depósito disponible
es de 140.000 Mts 2 .

Far loading and unloading of vehicles there are
tour ferry ramps. One mobile ramp is located on the EN-1
dock of 8 m. width, and three on the Santa Catalina ferry
quay. One of these is stationary and the other two are
mobile with 7 and B. m. respective/y.
The container handling takes place on the EN-1
dock with 510 m. length and 12 m. depth, working 3
portalcranes of 30 tons and one of 35 tons, as wel/ as on
the EN-2 dock with 410 m. length and 12 m. depth. The
storage area runs up to 140.000 m2 .

TRAF1CO DE CEREALES A GRANEL I GRAIN AND BULK
Hay en funcionamiento dos Silos para Cereales,
uno en el Muelle de La Luz, dotado con 4 tubos de aspira­ción
de granos, con una capacidad de almacenamiento
de 23.400 Tns. y otro en el arranque del Contradique in­terior
ó muelle EN-3, dotado de transportadores subte­rráneos
que permiten un rendimiento en la descarga de
buques graneleros, de 200 Tn./h. con una capacidad de
almacenamiento de 12.000 Tm.
TRAF1CO DE CEMENTO A GRANEL / CEMENT AND BULK
Existe igualmente un Silo para Cemento en el
Espigón del Castillo, dotado con 2 tuberías de trasvase
de cemento a presión, dispositivos de envasado y carga
a camiones. La capacidad de almacenamiento es de
8.500 Mts. 3
TRAF1CO DE PETROLEOS I OIL
Se dispone de una red de tuberías que van desde
las instalaciones petrolíferas a las distintas tomas situadas
en los muelles (ver 2.6). La capacidad acumulada de los
depósitos es de 253.980 Mts. 3
TRAF1CO DE ACEITES VEGETALES I VEGETABLE OIL
Se dispone de tuberías de d~scarga de aceites
vegetales, con tomas en el Muelle de La Luz y EN-1.
Two silos are operating in the Port. One at LA LUZ
dock, provided with 4 pipes of intake, with a storage ca­pacity
of 23.400 tons. The other one is situated on the EN-3
dock and is provided with underground transportation,
which allows an unloading of Bulkvessels of 200
tonslhour anda storage capacity of 12. 000 tons.
Another silo for cement operates at the ESP/GON
DEL CASTILLO dock and is provided with two pipes to
transfer the cement by pressure, equipment tor sackloa­ding
and loading on trucks. The storage capacity runs
up to 8.500 m3
The oil pipeline system runs from the petrolife­rous
installations to the different points of the docks. The
storage capacity of the different oiltanks is 253.980. m3
There are pipelines for unloading of vegetable oil
with points on the .:Jocks of LA LUZ and EN-1.
