LANZAROTE
LANZJ.ROTE, la "Isla delos Volcanes", es la mAs orient al del archi piélaeo Canario y la cuarta tanto en superficie 795 Km 2 como en número de habitantes --
60.COO aproximad.amente, distribuidos en 7 municipios t Arrecife, San Ba.rtolomé, Teguise ( primer nrtcleo urbano europeo en el archipi~l~o y antigua capital de la
Isla desde comienzos del Siglo r:v hasta el año 1.852), Haría, Tinajo , Tia.s y Yaiza. Es también la mAs baja en altitud, localizándose su altura máxima -635 mts. -
en las "Peñas del Chache" (Macizo de Famara) .-
El nombre dela Isla, LAHZAROTE, proviene de un navegante genovés l lamad.o Lancelotto que residió en ella en el Siglo '!:!v. El uso del lat1n en la cartografia -
de entonces dió l~ar a que se la denominara "INSULA. DE LANZAROTUS". -
La capital, Arrecife, -denominada por el escritor Agustin Mi llares Cantero "La Venecia de Canarias"-, tiene una población superior a los 30.000 habitantes,
y recibe su nombre de un escollo o ~cife situado a la entrada de su ant i guo Puerto natural. Posee Arrecife dos fortalezas que se edificaron hace siglos en pr~
visión de su defensa. El más antiguo de ellos, llamado de San Gabriel - en e l que instala el Museo Arqueológico- data del siglo XVII, se¡evanta frente a la Ciu-­dad
y está unido a ella por el popularmente conocido "Puente delas Bolas" . El otro Castillo, el de San Jod -hoy Museo internacional de Arte Contempor4neo -es -­bastante
mAs amplio y está situado en un promontorio de la costa, a no más de 8 mts. so'!Ire el nivel del mar, frente al Muelle de Los Mánnoles. Fué mandado cons-­truir
por el Rey Carlos III y quedó terminado en el año l. 779.-
Con la caida del imperio romano, las islas canarias fueron cas i olvidad.as hast a la Edad Media en que empezaron a servisitadas por navegantes europeos con el
propósito de oomeroiar, capturar esclavos, etc. y fué precisamente Lanzarote, la Isla en la que más cebaron los piratas y aventureros de aquellos tiempos, a los­que
les fu~ arrebatada, en los albores del Siglo XV, por una expedición francesa acaudillada por el nonnando Juan de Bethencourth, que actuaba bajo las directri­ces
del reino de Castilla, razón por la que LANZAROTE, ha pertenecido desde entonces a España. Después dehaber sidd gobernada algunos a:ños por los franceses en -
régimen de señorío, la Isla pas6 directamente a manos españolas representadas por el l inaje de los Peraza y Herreras and.aluces.-
LA.'fZAROTE, en el curso de sus casi 20 millones de años de exist enci a, s urgid del l echo marino a través de sucesivas e incontables erupciones volcánicas. Se­conocen
dos: La del Siglo XVIII entre los años 1730 y 1736, consideradas como l as de mayor magnitud de cuántas han ocur:-ido en la época moderna en todo el nrundo
y otroas de algo más de 2 me~es de duración en el año 1824.-
Durante la erupción más antigua, la de Timanfa_ya al suroeste de l a I s l a , se abrieron mdltiples cráteres quedando aproximadamente la cuarta parte de la Isla­cubierta
de cadenas de conos volcánicos, lavas, escorias y cenizas. Muchos puebl os y cortijos fueron arrasados por las avalanchas de lava incandescentes, otros -
sufrieron los efectos de las lluvias de lapillis y cenizas. Toda la zona, segdn se dice la más fértil y productiva, qued6 asolada.-
La erupci6n del año 1.824, conocida por l a del Tinguaton, apenas produjo daños, no sólo porque fu~ de menor intensidad y erlensi6n que la precedente, sino -
porque además, sus materiales se de:> pts.rramarQn, en gran parte, por zonas que ya habian sido desvastadas. En el fondo del cráter del Tinguaton se abre la "Cueva -
del Diablo", explorada hasta una pro!'undidad. de 80 metros aproximadamente y con fama de ser l a cima más profunda de Canarias.-
En las Montañas del Fuego, compuestas por las de Timanfa_ya y los crát eres contiguos a ella, se ubica "el Islote de Hila.ria", lu"'81' en el que se re~istra las
más altas temperaturas volcánicas residuales de la Isla; a menos de un metro de profundidad., en cualquier hoyo que se excave en su parte alta o en sus laderas, se
obtienen temperaturas prd:ximas a los 100 grados centigrados. Con fines demostrativos se han enterrado a.111, tubos con una profundidad. media de 10 metros, obtenie_!l
dose temperaturas prdximas a los 400 grados centígrados y es espectacular ver como el ~a que se introduce por ellos pasa, instantáneamente de su estado liquido
al gaseoso fonnando geiseres de blanca espuma. Sin embargo, y apesar de ello , en est a zona existe vid.a: los líquenes, simbiosis perfecta entre un alga y un hongo
que han empezado a colonizar estos inhdspito~ lugares.- ... / / ...

LANZAROTE
La actividad econ6rnica de LAHZARO~S, próspera y prometedora gira en torno al turismo, la pesca, y la a.gricultura. En cuánto al primero es fácil apreciar
con los datos que en este estudio se ofrecen, la evolución que ha experimenta.do, alcanza.do en los diez 6ltimos años un crecimiento superior al 2801 en n6rne­ro
de visitantes, contante con magnificas y modernos establecimientos en lo~ q:ie el confort y la calidad de sus servicios son el "Label" de su prestigio. La.­si~
lar configuraci6n fisica de la lela y el permanente esfuerzo de sus gentes en respetar la naturaleza hace que, oa.da vez más, LANZAROTE seconsolide como­destino
turístico preferente.-
La pesca, que convierte a Lanza.rote en el primer puerto sardinal de España, rrrueve un importante censo laboral activo, y ha sido, es y será una de las ac
tividades fundamentales de sus hombres y mujeres, pues si bien ellCBse aprestan a la.a laboree de captura, ella.a se emplean en la manufactura de la.a varias
factorías de conservas de pescado existentes. La vieja, el mero y un sinfín innumerable de especies, aguardan en las aguas limpias y tranquilas de nuestro ma.i
ser capturadas.-
La agricultura, medio -de vida igualmente .tradicional, ha hecho del hombre lanzaroteño un h~roe de su propio trabajo, obt.eniendo all! d6nde parece imposi­ble
y convirtiendo el suelo de su Iala, terriblemente cast~ga.da, en un bello espect!culo del que da f~ "LA GERIA". 111!,como en otros muchos increíbles rinco­nes
de la geografía insular, queda patente el esfuerzo, el tesón y el amor a aquello de lo que el hombre es oapa.z. Su observaci6n y su trabajo han ~echo pos i­ble,
pese a la escasez de lluvias la increíble agricultura que la Isla posee, en ella la ceniza volcánica es utilizada -por su propiedad higroscópica.- como u:
milagroso manto que provoca la fertilidad de esta dura tierra.-
y junto a lo que la naturaleza generosamente ha donado a Lanzarote, surge la mano de ~l hombre que con sabia maestría ha realizado obra.s de infraestr1c:·

visitas tur!stico-culturales, disponen de un auditorio en el que peri6dicamente importantes eventos artísticos.-

del Parque Nacional de Timanf~a que le convierte en un paisaje para ser contemplado con

Salida desde Arrecife por la Carretera Norte. Una vez pasa
dos los pueblos de Tahiohe y Nazaret se llega a Teguise, anti-=
gua capital de La.nzarote, interesante Villa del s. XVIII, reco­mendando
la visita del Castillo de Ouanapayf Los Valles, impor­tante
por sus cultivos y por su arquitectura. popular. Haria, en
clavado en un valle aaturado de palmeras. Después de atravesar:
los pueblos de Maguez 7 Yé, se llega al Mirador del Río para -­contemplar
desde aquí las Islas de La Oraoiosa, Montaña Clara -
y Alegranza. Cuevas de los Verdes y Jameos del Agua son grutas­voloánioas
de inoaloulable valor geológico y eatétioo. Se regre
sa por Mala y Guatiza, zonas agrioolas donde se cultiva sobre=
todo la ooohinilla.-

the villages of Tahiohe and Nazaret before arriving at Te
guise, the old capital ot the island. This lovely town da.ter blaok

reoommended. Next is Los.Valles, an important agrioultural centre
wtith typioal architecture of the ialand with Haria a few wilea
distant. This lies in a valley with many palm trees. After rea­ohing
the villages of Maguez and Ye a stop is made at the famed
lookout point knouwn as the Mirador del río whioh offers a won­derful
view of the smaller outer islands inoluding La Oraoiosa,
Montaña Clara and Alegranza. Inoluded are the oave of "Los Vel'­des"
and Jameos del Agua, both ot voloanio origin and with great
geologioal value. The return is through Mala and Ouatiza both,
agrioultural areas with the emphasia on ooohineal.-

Salida desde Arrecife y después de pasar los pueblos de Tías
y Conil se llega a La Oeria, impresionante zona de arenas ne~
gras donde el il18enio del campesino ha heoho posible el cultivo
de la exquisita uva malvasía. Yaize, notable por su arquitectu­ra
popular. Janubio, importante industria de sal. Loe Hervide-­ros
son un conjunto de ma~aa de lava erosionadas por la mar for
mando atraotivas cuevas. El Golfo, fantástico cráter abierto ha
cia el mar, formándose en su interior una laguna de agua salada
y de intenso color verde. Se regresa de nuevo a Yaiza, para lle
gar al Parque Nacional de Tiinanfaya, zona volcánica máe impo~
tanta de la Isla·, se recomienda la vial ta a la Ruta de Loa Vol­canes.
Se regresa por Tinajo o por Mancha Blanca, zona import&_!!
te de arenad.os, basta llegar a Mozaga, donde se levanta el No-­nwnento
y Casa Museo del Campesino.
Y después de pasar pór el pueblo de San Bartolomé se llega -
de nuevo a Arrecife.-

the island. Visitors should not miss the trip known as "Route of the Voloanos". After experienoing the underground thermal­heat
at Hilario, the trip continues on 'to Tinajo or vía Mancha Blanca (eee ma.p) to rea.ch Mozaga with its monwnent and mu--­seum

En el 'dltimo trimestre de 1.986, entrd en servioio el Aula Itinerante de, Idiomas adquiri­da
por la Consejer!a de Turismo y Transportes del Gobierno de Canarias. Dicha Aula, «1'19 se enouen -
tra ubioada por razones de mqor ooncentraoiC,n laboral activa en el municipio de T!as, viene impar­tiendo
desde entonces cursos de ingUs oon ca.ra.oter total.mente gratuito a personal empleado en el -
sector turfstioo de la isla.
Bl curso, que sigue las pautas del Consejo de Europa e I.c.c. (International Certifioate
Conferenoe) es el Streamline English para el Nivel I 7 el Five Star !hglish para el Nivel II, ea un
mdtodo de flexibilidad did!otica y metodolog!a activa y participativa.
El ,:tlto de esta iniciativa de la Consejer!a de Turismo y Transportes del Gobierno de Ca­narias,
viene avalado por las m4s de doscientas persones insoritaa en dicho curso.

BREVE SINOPSIS SOBRE EL PLAN INSULA.R Di LANZAROTE
&l Diciembre de 1.986 el Excmo. Cabildo Insular de Lanza.rote ha encargado la red.aooidn del -
avance del Plan Insular de la isla al equipo "Arquitectos Urbanistas e Ingenieros Asociados" (J..u.r.J..)
dirigido por Fernando Prat-A.rquiteoto y F. ManoMn-Ingeniero que ocupar& a m'8 de 20 profesional.es de
distintas especialidades.
El objetivo del avance del Plan Insular es evaluar las conseouenoias generales y loe impaotof;l
producid.os por el fuerte crecimiento tur!stioo-inmobiliario de la isla y establecer, en oonseou.enoia,
una propuesta que resuelva posit ivamente las contrad.iociones suaoitadas por dioho desarrollo y salva­guarde
los valores naturales y cult urales de Lanzarote.
El trabajo se organiza en suoesi vas fases que culminan a un primer nivel oon la entrega del &­vanoe
que contendr& el an&lisis de diversas alternativas y la reoomendacidn de una propuesta de carao­ter
global y concreta. Dicha propuesta se contempla oomo un instrumento para la disousidn, ooncerta -
oi6n y toma de decisiones entre las diversas instituciones implicadas en el tema. Cubierto este trtmi­te,
se proceder& a la redacoidn definitiva del Plan Insular.

1) .Aoeptaci6n del turismo por la poblaoi6n aut6ctona de la islas
Casi laa dos terceras partea de la poblaoi6n isleña (59%) aceptan de bufn grado la afluencia tur!stica a la isla, y m'8 oonoretamente en su lugar de
residencia. Sin obviar que dos de oada cinco de los lugareños entrevistados (4~) se muestran indiferent es.
2) Incidencia del turismo en la islas
Loa factores de incidencia 111'8 citados se concentraron alrededor de lu oitas que podan de relieve la importancia del turismo para el desarrollo -
eoon6mioo de la isla. Un 56% hbo referencia a la oreaoidn de puestos de trabajo.
Di general no pareoe evidencia.rae ningdn aspecto de incidencia negativa. El 53~ de la poblaoi6n no llegd a formular ninguna critica o perjuicio para
el desarrollo de la comunidad. Cabe no obstante comentar que fueron los ishños m'8 j6venes, y en Dl8'YOr proporci6n los varones, quienes hicieron re­ferencia
a la hipoteca de la isla por los inversores tur!stioos extranjeros, de igual forma que son portavoces de las citas sobre el deterioro del -
medio ambiental y f!sioo de Lanzarote.

nivel actual, distribuyfndose estas dos menciones en proporciones del 5c,%. S6lo un fff<. de la muestra atirm6 que, en su opini6n, deberla restringirse
el nt1mero de visitantes a la isla.

La escasa altura de la Isla, hace que ,ata ae encuentre envuelta
en aire marino, provocando una humedad relativa que llega a alcanzar un -
valor medio del 61% anual. La temperatura ea uniforme con una.a medias que
oscilan entre 13,5 •c. y 21,6 •c. en invierno y 18•c. a 28,6 •c. en vera.­no.
La pluvioaidad se aitua entre 150 y 200 Ull1• por año. Ooasionalme~
te se presentan vientos c'1idoa del Sur y Sureste, que provocan un desee~
so de la humedad relativa hasta un 35%. La inaolaci6n ea muy elevada. Oc~
sionalmente en vera.no se forman bancos de niebla motivados por el ascenso
de los vientos atlánticos al chocar con el risco de Farnara.
La.a variaciones mAs sensibles se dan en el Norte donde se acent~a
la aenaaci6n climática de frescura y una media de humedad más alta.
El Sur de la Isla tiene mayor inaolaci6n y es m'8 seco. La nuboai
dad se acentua de diciembre a Enero.
