Este es el documento final del homenaje personal que Orlando Britto y yo
realizamos para Antonio a las orillas del Níger durante nuestra estancia
en Mali con motivo de la Bienal de Fotografía de Bamako, en 2009, en la
que estábamos participando. Un día el azar nos puso delante, en el patio
de un establecimiento en el que entramos a tomar algo, una especie de
mural artístico compuesto con múltiples casillas ocupadas con el nombre
de personas ilustres y celebridades históricas reconocidas en todo tipo
de actividades: políticos, artistas, deportistas, científicos, filósofos, etc.
Vimos que había varias casillas vacías y decidimos tratar de hacer una
acción-intervención homenaje a nuestro querido Antonio, ocupando con
su nombre una de las casillas vacías. Explicamos primero a la propietaria
del mural quién era Antonio Zaya para nosotros. Sonrió y aceptó nuestra
idea y así se plasmó con nuestra acción-intervención en aquella obra,
el recuerdo y homenaje conjunto de Orlando y mío a nuestro querido
Antonio con la inclusión de su nombre en una de las casillas vacías de
aquel lugar de África, a las orillas del Níger.
Esto ocurrió en el segundo aniversario del último viaje de Antonio y lo que
aqui ves es el resultado final, con su nombre, a partir de aquella acción-intervención.
Aquel momento, y lo que realizamos, nos hizo sentir muy
bien en el recuerdo y memoria de nuestro amigo, con quien compartimos
y reímos tantos momentos y tantas hermosas vivencias, del que tanto
aprendimos y al que seguimos recordando y mencionando con frecuencia.

This is the final document of the personal tribute that Orlando Britto
and I paid to Antonio on the banks of the Niger during our stay in Mali
for the Bamako Photography Biennale in 2009. One day, on the patio
of an establishment where we had stepped in to have a drink, chance
placed us in front of a sort of artistic mural made up of multiple spaces
or compartments, each with the name of an important historical figure
in the fields of politics, art, sport, science, philosophy, etc.
We noticed that some of the spaces were empty, and we thought we
would undertake some sort of action-intervention as a tribute to our dear
Antonio, putting his name in one of the empty spaces. First we explained
to the proprietor who Antonio was and what he meant to us. He smiled
and accepted our idea, so our action-intervention took shape as a joint
tribute by Orlando and me to our dear friend, with the inclusion of his
name in one of the empty spaces of that place in Africa, on the banks
of the Niger.
This occurred on the second anniversary of Antonio’s last journey, and
what you see here is the final result of that action-intervention, with his
name inscribed. That moment, and what we did in it, brought alive the
memory of our friend, with whom we had shared so many moments,
so much laughter, and so many beautiful experiences, the friend from
whom we had learned so much, and who continues to dwell in our memo-ries
and thoughts.
